Welcome to our family of physicists
The Department of Physics, Asutosh college have a legacy of nurturing young minds backed with a vibrant and dynamic group of world-renowned physicists. The department carries the legacy of stalwarts like ARC (Prof. Amal Roychowdhury), KGM (Prof. K.G. Majumdar) and many more. Currently we offer (a) 3-year Undergraduate Curriculum as prescribed by University of Calcutta, (b) 6-Semester (CBCS) Undergraduate Curriculum as also recommended by UGC and prescribed by University of Calcutta, and (c) 2-year Postgraduate Curriculum (in distance mode) offered by Vidyasagar University. We intend to initiate 4-Semester Postgraduate Curriculum (in regular mode) to be offered by University of Calcutta. We take pride of nurturing young minds in 3-fold interdisciplenary ways: (i) theoretical classes as in smartclass rooms, (ii) state-of-the-art, as well as, ancient precision laboratory equipments, (iii) state-of-the-art computational facility for numerical mathematics. We also offer innovative projects to student s on all three branches & invite reserchers throughout the Globe for informal presentation to progress in their respective career. The department is also actively engaged in the cutting edge research on Radiophysics, Soft condensed matter physics and Mathematical physics.

Experimental and Computational Facility


  • Experiment: We provide both cutting-edge and antique equipments that carry the best of both era, for example, blah blah blah and blah blah blah.
  • Computation: We provide a computer lab equipped with 10 Desktop machines and 16 Laptop with Windows 8.1, 2GB RAM, 320GB Harddisk and standard softwares e.g. DevC++, Octave, SciLab etc to carry out numerical mathematics for third year UG students. We plan to extend the facility to all batches of UG under the new CBCS curriculm of UGC.

Departmental Activities


Our department always tries to provide exposure to students beyond UG curriculum by inviting experts from different institutions of higher learning. We're open to host faculties to deliver a student-level seminar in accord to their expertise, provided we are intimated in due time.

Geographically we are located near Hazra More, Jatin Das Park in Kolkata. The department can be easily accessible via Metro Railway, Buses or private Cab services from Dumdum Airport or Howrah/Sealdah railway station. We're hosted at the first floor of the main building of Asutosh College.
